ADDRESSING THE ISSUE OF SOCIAL EVILS
Women were trained to take up social issues with our guidance and awareness programmes.
So far, in Northern Province of DMI (geographically North India) the following issues
have been taken.

- Raping and molestation in Danapur
- False complaints on theft in Danapur.
- Buffalo attack and victimization in Danapur.
- Insulting and eve-teasing by group of men in Danapur and Jaynagar.
- Sexual assault by in-laws in Jaynagar – Bihar state.
- Dowry harassment in Tumsar.
- Wife battering in Jaynagar, five places in Danapur, one place in
Diglipur.
- Selling of alcohol illegally in houses and also in shops at Tumsar.
- Against non-functioning of Anganwadi in Tumsar.
>>In Kattupakkam, the local youth were involved in eve teasing sitting
near to the bus stand. The young girls and women had to bear all the abusive language
of these barbarian youth. The members of Kattupakkam Panchayt Level Federation discussed
this issue in their meeting and wanted to put a curtain to this problem. Hence they
decided to lodge a complaint to the local Police station. On getting the complaint
the Sub Inspector of police made every move to catch hold off the eve teasers. Seeing
the frequent rounds of police personnel, eve teasing problem was stopped at Kattupakkam.
>> A woman namely Mrs. Saroja joined in one of our SHGs. While introducing
herself, she refused to talk about her husband as they do not have any contact nearly
for 10 years. The other women of this SHG already knew that she lives alone. The
members discussed this issue and wanted to help this woman to join with her husband.
By the intervention SHG members they are leading a happy life at this juncture.
>> In Thiruninravur, one of our SHG women’s husband committed subside,
due to his personal problem. No one was there to help or to remove the body for
burial. On hearing the news, the Thiruninravur PLF leaders went to her house and
helped in cremating the body of her husband.
>> A boy studying in Poonamallee Government School after the school
hours was waiting in the bus stop to return to his village. The particular bus which
goes to his village did not stop at the bus stop. Getting annoyed, the boy threw
a stone at the bus in which the mirror of the bus was damaged. The police arrested
the boy immediately. On hearing this, the Thirumazhisai PLF women lodged a complaint
against the driver who actually did not stop the bus in the school stop. The police
warned the student and released through the intervention of PLF women. The PLF women
submitted a petition to the transport officer to see to that the particular buses
stop in the school bus stop.
>> In Voyalanallur, people were taking sand from the river illegally.
The society created awareness to the youth and SHG members and they lodged a complaint
in the police station to arrest the miscreants. The police investigated the case
and warned the members who were taking the sand criminally. They stopped further
stealing of the sand from the river bed.
>> Mrs. Velankanni was a widow with three children. She is a member
in Poonamallee PLF. Her husband met with an accident and was bedridden for seven
years. Soon after his death, the relatives of her husband chased her away by taking
all her property. She informed this to her fellow members. They then lodge a complaint
to the Commissioner of to take appropriate actions to get back her property. Having
investigated the case, the police arrested the criminals and the property was given
back to her. It is because of the collective effort of the federation members.
